A AvGeek A self-applied label for an aviation enthusiast, popularised as a hashtag. B belly shot A photograph of an aircraft's underside, taken as it passes overhead. bizjet A business or corporate jet. blocked Spotter slang for a photograph ruined by something in front of the subject — another aircraft, a ground vehicle, a light mast. C catch An aircraft successfully seen or photographed, especially an unexpected or rare one. F frame An individual aircraft, short for airframe — and, confusingly, also a single photograph. H hunting Actively seeking out a particular aircraft, livery or type rather than photographing whatever appears. L logbook A spotter's personal record of the aircraft they have seen, kept by registration. M mudflap The deflector fitted behind a nose landing gear wheel to stop water and debris being thrown up into the engines. N nose-on A photograph taken from close to the aircraft's centreline, looking straight at the nose. P prop A propeller, and by extension a propeller-driven aircraft. R rarity How unusual an aircraft is at a given place, and the main thing that makes a spot noteworthy. S scanner A radio receiver used to listen to air traffic control and airport frequencies. spotter Someone who watches, logs or photographs aircraft as a hobby. spotting The hobby of observing, identifying, logging and photographing aircraft. T tail Spotter shorthand for an individual airframe, taken from its tail number. tarmac Popular but imprecise word for the paved areas of an airport; the correct terms are apron, ramp and taxiway. the fence The airport perimeter fence, and by extension the standard spotting position outside it.
