A supplementary optic between lens and body that multiplies the focal length.

A 1.4x converter turns 400mm into 560mm and costs one stop of light; a 2x doubles the reach and costs two. Both magnify the lens's own flaws along with the image and can slow or degrade autofocus, so a converter is a compromise made when there is no longer lens and enough light to spare.
