Metering from a small area of the frame rather than the whole scene.
Spot metering is the reliable way to expose an aircraft that occupies a small part of a very bright or very dark frame: meter the fuselage and let the background fall where it will. It is unforgiving if the spot lands somewhere unrepresentative, which is why it pays to know where the meter is reading from.
