By working the spanwise flow at the tip, a winglet cuts induced drag without the structural penalty of simply making the wing longer — and, on the ground, without needing a wider gate. The shapes are distinctive enough to identify a variant at distance: blended winglets, split scimitars, the Boeing 737 MAX's dual-feather AT winglet, and the raked tips used instead of a winglet on the 787 and 777X.
