missed approach
The published procedure flown when an approach cannot be continued to a landing.
Every instrument approach ends with a missed-approach procedure: a climb, a track and a level to hold at, so a crew that does not see the runway at the decision point has a safe path already briefed. In practice, "missed approach" is the procedure and "go-around" is the manoeuvre that starts it.
