lens flare

Flare comes from a bright source in or near the frame — the sun, or an apron floodlight — bouncing between glass surfaces. A hood, a clean front element and one fewer filter all reduce it, and it is sometimes worth keeping for the sense of shooting into the light. Not to be confused with the aviation flare, the nose-up check before touchdown.
