histogram

A graph of how many pixels fall at each brightness level in an image.

The histogram is a more reliable exposure check than the rear screen, which lies about brightness in sunlight. Data piled against the right edge means clipped highlights, which for a white aircraft in sun is the failure to watch for; against the left edge means crushed shadows.
